Volcanoes National Park recently acquired this 116,000 acre uncharted section of the Kahuku Mountain range which used to be a private ranch. There are many archeological sites and endangered plant life yet to be recorded. You might be one of the first hikers to access many of these areas. 
The wonderful Hale O Ao hiking cabin is the closest vacation rental cabin with access to this area and a perfect place to stay while exploring the park, the southern part of Hawaii and surrounding areas.
